Wild Dunes on Isle of Palms: Everything You Need to Know

May 26. 2026

There’s a moment that happens when you drive past the marina, past the shops, past the neighborhoods — all the way to the far eastern tip of Isle of Palms — where the island opens up into something extraordinary.

That’s Wild Dunes

Spanning 1,600 acres of barrier island at the quieter end of IOP, Wild Dunes is one of the most complete coastal destinations on the entire East Coast. Championship golf. World-class tennis and pickleball. A full-service spa. Beautiful restaurants. Miles of bike trails. And two miles of pristine Atlantic beach holding it all together.

Whether you’re already booked in one of our Deserving Vacations rentals on Isle of Palms or just starting to plan, here’s your complete guide to everything Wild Dunes has to offer — and how to make the most of every single day there.

Golf at Wild Dunes: Two World-Class Courses by Tom Fazio

Golf is woven into the DNA of Wild Dunes. The property’s two signature courses were both designed by acclaimed architect Tom Fazio, and together they’ve earned a reputation as some of the finest coastal golf in the Southeast. Whether you’re a scratch golfer or a weekend warrior, you’ll want to make time for at least one round.

The Links Course

The showstopper. The Links Course runs along the edge of the Atlantic with rolling fairways and a finishing hole that looks out over the ocean — one of the most memorable closing holes you’ll find anywhere. Newly renovated and in stunning condition, it plays beautifully in every direction. A full driving range and pro shop round out the experience.

The Harbor Course

Where The Links Course gives you ocean drama, The Harbor Course gives you Lowcountry beauty. Winding through the salt marsh and along the Intracoastal Waterway, this course rewards patience and strategy with fast greens and scenery that’ll have you stopping mid-fairway just to take it all in.

Pro tip: Book a morning tee time in summer. The courses fill up fast, and getting out early means cooler temps and the whole day still ahead of you. Tee times available at Wild Dunes Rsort

Tennis & Pickleball: One of the Best Programs on the East Coast

Wild Dunes has a storied tennis legacy — it was once the official host site of the U.S. Clay Court Championships, and that pedigree still shows. The Wild Dunes Tennis Center features 12 clay courts (including a stadium court) and 6 dedicated pickleball courts, all centrally located near the Boardwalk Inn and Sweetgrass Plaza.

Daily clinics, private lessons, round robins, and structured programs are available for every skill level — from beginners picking up a racquet for the first time to competitive players looking for serious practice time. The clay surface is easy on the joints and makes for a longer, more tactical game that’s genuinely fun to play for hours.

And if pickleball is your thing? Six courts, a knowledgeable staff, and one of the better setups you’ll find on any island in the Southeast

As amenities and access policies at Wild Dunes can vary by property and change seasonally, we always recommend checking current details at Wild Dunes Rsort or reaching out to us directly before your trip.

The Spa at Sweetgrass: A Coastal Sanctuary Right on the Island

Tucked into the Sweetgrass Inn, The Spa at Sweetgrass is a 10,000-square-foot wellness retreat inspired by the healing energy of the South Carolina coast. Think serene treatment rooms, an outdoor jacuzzi, spa cabanas, and open-air garden spaces that make the whole experience feel more like a ritual than an appointment.

The treatment menu covers everything from Swedish massage and deep tissue to facials, body rituals, manicures, pedicures, and salon services. For something more restorative, they also offer vibrational sound therapy, Reiki facials, and craniosacral treatments. You can personalize your massage with CBD, arnica, or magnesium enhancements — or add a scalp, foot, or hand treatment to extend the experience.

Hours: Monday–Thursday 9am–6pm | Friday–Saturday 9am–8pm

Tip: Book ahead, especially on summer weekends. Treatments fill up fast.

Biking at Wild Dunes: Miles of Trails Through the Lowcountry

Honestly, biking might be the most underrated thing about Wild Dunes. Miles of dedicated trails wind through the property — past maritime forest, along the marsh, through the golf courses and out toward the beach — and the flat, shaded terrain makes it genuinely enjoyable for every age and fitness level.

Bike rentals are available daily on a walk-up basis right on property. Grab a cruiser, pack a water bottle, and just explore. There’s no better way to feel the full scale of Wild Dunes or stumble onto a view you weren’t expecting.

Dining at Wild Dunes: Something for Every Mood

Wild Dunes has more dining than most visitors realize — from a grab-and-go coffee stop before golf to a proper dinner with cocktails and ocean views. Here’s where to eat:

Coastal Provisions — Boardwalk Inn

The signature dining experience at Wild Dunes. Coastal Provisions serves breakfast, lunch, and dinner with an emphasis on fresh Lowcountry ingredients and a menu that changes with the seasons. The crab omelet at breakfast is legendary, and dinner’s raw bar and fresh-catch menu make it worth a reservation. Floor-to-ceiling windows with Atlantic views don’t hurt.

Beachside Burgers & Bar — Grand Pavilion

Casual beachside dining with the ocean right in front of you. Cold drinks, great burgers, and that perfect afternoon energy. Exactly what it sounds like, and exactly what you want after a morning on the beach

Oystercatcher Restaurant & Bar — Sweetgrass Inn

A coastal-modern dining experience in the lobby of the Sweetgrass Inn. Fresh seafood, creative cocktails, and the kind of relaxed atmosphere that makes dinner feel effortless. A great evening option when you don’t want to leave the property.

Huey’s Southern Eats — Links Course Clubhouse

Right at the golf course, Huey’s is a local favorite for big breakfasts and satisfying lunches. Biscuits and gravy, chicken and waffles, a catfish sandwich, juicy burgers — exactly the kind of fuel you want before (or after) 18 holes.

Hudson’s Market — Sweetgrass Plaza

Your grab-and-go stop for coffee, snacks, sandwiches, and provisions. Perfect for stocking up before a beach day or getting breakfast without sitting down.

Coastal Crust — Sweetgrass Plaza

Wood-fired pizza right on the property — Coastal Crust is one of those spots that always hits the spot. Whether you’re grabbing a quick lunch between activities or settling in for a casual dinner, the thin-crust pies and relaxed Sweetgrass Plaza atmosphere make this an easy favorite for families and groups alike.

Woody’s Eatery — Near the Tennis Courts & Swim Center

Perfectly positioned near the tennis courts, swim center, and Harbor Pro Shop, Woody’s is your go-to for a quick, satisfying bite in the middle of an active day. Grab a sandwich, a snack, or a cold drink without slowing down — it’s the kind of no-fuss spot you’ll be glad exists when you’re between a tennis clinic and an afternoon on the water.

The Beach: Two Miles of Atlantic Shoreline

At the end of every day at Wild Dunes, everything leads back here. Two miles of wide, clean, Atlantic beach stretch along the eastern edge of the property — quieter than the public stretches of IOP and all the more beautiful for it.

Beach chair and umbrella rentals are available on-property. You can also have gear delivered right to your door through the Isle of Palms Beach Chair Company — chairs, umbrellas, surfboards, paddleboards, and beach carts.

Sunrise tip: Get out before 7am and you’ll often have a long stretch of sand almost entirely to yourself. One of the best free things in the Lowcountry.

On the Water: From the Marsh to the Open Ocean

The waterways surrounding Wild Dunes are as much a part of the experience as the beach itself. A few ways to get out on the water:

  • IOP Marina — fishing charters, boat rentals, and sunset cruises just minutes away
  • Crabbing dock on-property — a kids’ favorite and surprisingly addictive for adults too (Located behind Lagoon Villas)

It features two championship golf courses, a world-class tennis and pickleball center, a full-service spa, multiple restaurants, miles of bike trails, and two miles of Atlantic beach.

Do I need to stay at the hotel to enjoy Wild Dunes amenities?

Not at all! Many amenities — including the golf courses, tennis center, spa, restaurants, and bike rentals — are open to guests staying in vacation rentals throughout Wild Dunes. Some pool complexes are community-specific, so it’s worth checking what’s included when you book.

How far is Wild Dunes from downtown Charleston?

Wild Dunes is about 30 minutes from downtown Charleston depending on traffic — close enough for a great day trip, far enough that you won’t feel like you’re in the city. It’s one of the things that makes Isle of Palms such a great home base for exploring the Lowcountry.

What’s the best way to get around Wild Dunes?

Bikes, honestly. The trail system makes it easy and enjoyable to get almost anywhere on the property without a car — bike rentals are available daily on a walk-up basis.
