Deserving Vacations

Best Charleston Beach: Isle of Palms vs. Sullivan's Island vs. Folly Beach

July 20. 2026

First Things First: You Don't Have to Choose Just One

Here's something many first-time visitors don't realize.

These beaches are incredibly close to one another.

From Isle of Palms, you can easily spend the morning relaxing on the beach, enjoy dinner on Sullivan's Island, explore historic downtown Charleston the next day, and even make an afternoon trip to Folly Beach before heading back to your vacation home.

That's one of the biggest reasons we love recommending Isle of Palms as a home base. You get the peaceful atmosphere of a family-friendly beach while staying close to everything that makes Charleston such an unforgettable destination.

If you're planning a long weekend, our 3-Day Charleston Itinerary is a great resource for mapping out beach time, downtown Charleston, and some of our favorite local restaurants.

Isle of Palms

Relaxed, Family-Friendly, and Made for Making Memories

If we had to describe Isle of Palms in one word, it would be comfortable.

Not because it's ordinary—but because everything about it encourages you to slow down.

Mornings begin with coffee on the porch while the island is still quiet. The beach is wide, welcoming, and never feels rushed. Families spread out with umbrellas and beach games, couples take long walks along the shoreline, and children spend hours chasing waves without ever looking at a screen.

It's the kind of place where vacation feels wonderfully simple.

One of our favorite family traditions is starting the day with breakfast at The Refuge before heading to the beach. If we're spending the entire day by the ocean, we'll usually stop by The Co-Op to pick up sandwiches for lunch. There's something about eating on the beach—with sandy feet, salty air, and nowhere else to be—that never gets old.

Those are the moments we remember most.

Not the schedules.

Not the reservations.

Just time together.

That's exactly what so many of our guests tell us after they return home.

Why Families Love Isle of Palms

There are plenty of reasons families return year after year.

The beach itself stretches for nearly seven miles, giving everyone plenty of room to spread out. The gentle surf is ideal for younger children, while older kids enjoy boogie boarding, shell hunting, and long walks searching for dolphins just offshore.

Parents appreciate how easy everything feels.

Parking is straightforward.

Beach access is convenient.

Restaurants are close by.

And after a full day outside, it's easy to head back to your vacation home for dinner or an evening on the porch.

For larger families and groups, Isle of Palms also offers something that's becoming harder to find—beautiful vacation homes where everyone can stay together under one roof.

Instead of booking several hotel rooms, grandparents, parents, and grandchildren can all gather around one dining table, share one living room, and make memories together.

Those are the vacations that become traditions.

Wild Dunes Adds Even More to Your Stay

Many of the homes we manage are located within Wild Dunes Resort, one of the premier coastal resorts in South Carolina.

If you've never visited, Wild Dunes offers so much more than beautiful beaches.

Guests can enjoy:

  • Championship golf courses
  • Tennis and pickleball
  • Miles of walking and biking trails
  • Resort restaurants
  • Pools
  • Spa services
  • Family activities throughout the year

It's one of the reasons Isle of Palms appeals to such a wide variety of travelers. Whether you're planning a golf weekend, a family reunion, or a relaxing beach vacation, there's always something to do—or nothing to do at all.

If you're considering staying within the resort, we recommend reading our Complete Guide to Wild Dunes before booking.

    Deserving Vacations Local Tip

One of our favorite evenings on Isle of Palms happens every Thursday during the summer.

The Isle of Palms Farmers Market brings together local artists, food vendors, musicians, and neighbors for an evening that feels more like a community gathering than a typical market.

You'll find handmade goods, fresh produce, Lowcountry treats, live music, and plenty of opportunities to support local businesses while soaking in the relaxed island atmosphere.

If your vacation overlaps with market season, we highly recommend adding it to your itinerary.

Read our complete guide to the Isle of Palms Farmers Market before your trip.

Why We Think Isle of Palms Makes the Perfect Home Base

We may be a little biased—but we genuinely believe Isle of Palms offers the best balance of everything visitors are looking for.

You have beautiful beaches without overwhelming crowds.

    Easy access to Charleston.

    Fantastic local restaurants.

Resort amenities if you want them.

Quiet neighborhoods where families can truly relax.

And best of all, you're only a short drive from Sullivan's Island and Folly Beach, making it easy to experience all three during the same vacation.

That's something many first-time visitors don't realize until they're here.

    And once they do...

They usually start planning their next trip before this one is over.

Our Favorite Day on Isle of Palms

When friends ask us how we'd spend the perfect day on the island, our answer is usually pretty simple.

    Start with breakfast at Acme.

Walk the beach before it gets busy.

Pick up lunch from The Co-Op and spend the afternoon by the ocean.

If you're staying in Wild Dunes, rent bikes and explore the shaded paths that wind through the resort.

After everyone has cleaned up, head to The Windjammer for live music and watch the sun begin to set over the Atlantic.

    It's not a complicated itinerary.

But somehow, those simple days become the ones we remember most.

      Sullivan's Island

Quiet Charm, Incredible Dining, and a Slower Pace

Just across Breach Inlet from Isle of Palms, you'll find Sullivan's Island—a beach town that feels a little different from the moment you arrive.

There are no large resorts or high-rise hotels here. Instead, you'll discover quiet streets shaded by live oaks, charming beach homes, and a close-knit community that has managed to preserve its laid-back character.

Sullivan's Island is where many locals go when they're looking for a slower evening, a memorable meal, or a peaceful walk along the beach.

That's exactly why we recommend it to so many of our guests.

While Isle of Palms is a wonderful place to spend the day, Sullivan's Island is one of our favorite places to spend an evening

        Come Hungry

If you've talked to anyone who's visited Charleston recently, there's a good chance you've already heard about The Obstinate Daughter.

It's one of those restaurants that people plan vacations around.

Known for its fresh coastal cuisine, handmade pastas, and welcoming atmosphere, it's a favorite among both visitors and locals. Reservations can be difficult to snag during peak season, so if it's on your list, we recommend booking ahead.

Of course, The Obstinate Daughter isn't the only reason to visit.

Sullivan's Island is home to several excellent restaurants, cozy cafés, and neighborhood favorites, making it the perfect destination for a leisurely dinner after a day at the beach.

        Deserving Vacations Local Tip

When family or friends come to visit, one of our favorite evenings starts with an early dinner reservation on Sullivan's Island, followed by a walk on the beach as the sun begins to set.

There's something special about ending the day there. The crowds begin to thin, the breeze cools off, and the island takes on an entirely different feel.

It's one of those simple experiences that reminds you why people fall in love with the Lowcountry.

A Little History Along the Way

Sullivan's Island isn't just beautiful—it's also one of the most historic places in the Charleston area.

Fort Moultrie, located near the western end of the island, has protected Charleston Harbor through multiple conflicts dating back to the Revolutionary War. Today, visitors can walk through the fort, explore exhibits, and enjoy sweeping views of the harbor.

Even if you're not a history buff, it's worth a stop.

It offers a different perspective on the Charleston area and adds another layer to your beach vacation.

Why We Recommend Visiting (Even If You Stay Somewhere Else)

One of the biggest advantages of staying on Isle of Palms is that Sullivan's Island is only a few minutes away.

That means you don't have to choose between the two.

Spend your day enjoying the wide beaches and resort amenities of Isle of Palms, then head over to Sullivan's Island for dinner and a sunset stroll.

It's one of our favorite combinations—and one we recommend often.

          Folly Beach

Surf Culture, Live Music, and a Laid-Back Vibe

If Isle of Palms is relaxed and Sullivan's Island is refined, Folly Beach is undeniably fun.
Known as "The Edge of America," Folly has built its reputation on surf culture, colorful beach shops, live music, and a personality that's uniquely its own.
From the moment you cross the bridge onto the island, you'll notice the difference.

          Surfboards line front porches.
Flip-flops are considered appropriate almost everywhere.
Live music drifts out of restaurants.

People slow down—not because they have to, but because that's just how Folly feels.

            Spend the Day Exploring

The heart of Folly Beach is its walkable downtown, where you'll find surf shops, boutiques, seafood restaurants, coffee shops, and casual spots perfect for an afternoon break.

The Edwin S. Taylor Fishing Pier is another popular stop, offering beautiful ocean views and one of the best places to watch surfers or cast a line.
If you're feeling adventurous, you can even book a surf lesson or paddleboarding excursion while you're there.

            Folly has a contagious energy.

            It's playful.
            Creative.
            Relaxed.

And completely different from the other Charleston beaches.

            Deserving Vacations Local Tip

If you're spending the day on Folly Beach, consider arriving in the morning and staying through dinner.
You'll have time to enjoy the beach, browse the local shops, grab an ice cream, and settle in for live music before heading back to Isle of Palms.
It's an easy day trip that lets you experience another side of Charleston's coastal culture.

Which Charleston Beach Is Right for You?

At the end of the day, there isn't one beach that's "better" than the others.

            Each one offers something different.

Here's how we usually help guests decide.

              Our Advice? Experience All Three.

One of the biggest misconceptions we hear is that choosing one beach means missing out on the others.

              Fortunately, that's not the case.

One of the greatest advantages of vacationing on Isle of Palms is its central location.

You can wake up to the sound of the Atlantic Ocean, spend the afternoon wandering through historic downtown Charleston, enjoy dinner on Sullivan's Island, and plan another day exploring Folly Beach—all without feeling like you're spending your vacation in the car.

In fact, that's exactly what many of our returning guests do.

They make Isle of Palms their home base, then enjoy exploring everything else the Charleston coast has to offer.

If you're planning a long weekend, our 3-Day Charleston Itinerary is one of our favorite resources for combining beach days, local restaurants, and Charleston's historic charm into one unforgettable trip.

Why We Love Calling Isle of Palms Home

If you've made it this far, you probably won't be surprised by our answer.

When guests ask us where we'd stay if we were planning a Charleston beach vacation, we almost always recommend Isle of Palms.

Not because it's the only beautiful beach along the coast—but because it offers the best balance.

You can spend your mornings walking along a quiet shoreline with a cup of coffee in hand.

You can spend the afternoon introducing your children to the ocean, building sandcastles, hunting for shells, or simply enjoying the rare gift of having nowhere else to be.

You can tee off at one of Wild Dunes' championship golf courses, ride bikes beneath the live oaks, or spend the day by the pool before heading into Charleston for dinner.

And when you're ready to explore something new, Sullivan's Island and Folly Beach are just a short drive away.

That's what makes Isle of Palms so special.

It gives you the freedom to experience the best of the Charleston coast while still offering a peaceful place to come home to at the end of each day.

For us, that's what vacation should feel like.
